Original launch review for the 1974 Porsche Carrera RS

There are so many cars that conjure up the need for a crystal ball and this is one of them. Talk about 'if only'.... At the time, the Porsche brand was exotic, rare and quality and the RS model was subtly tweaked in all the right places for the weekend racer type but the perception was it still had strong VW origins so who would have though a possible half million pounds in 2011?? without that crystal ball, what new models now are heading to the same stratosphere?

Period Recaro seats advert from 1974 -

I really desire these seats nearly 40 years on.. as others do as a mint set goes for ££s in any condition. Could they look better that in an early 911S?  This is more original content not from elsewhere on the web not seen the light of day since the med 70s.

John Cobb at Brooklands - 4 wheels off the ground in a Napier

A true hero of the past. John Cobb in his epic Napier Railton gets all 4 wheels off the ground. no barriers... no helmets or belts, drum brakes & radial tyres. The most surprising part of the picture is the chap casually sitting o the wall on the inside of the corner.

how sideways? or vertical... in a pre '73 911 trying very hard.

I love this period shot of a 911 rally car at the most extraordinary angle, not side ways as such but great drama.

Gil Elvgren pin ups - all car related of course.....

1974 - Becker & Blaupunkt car stereo adverts - original content

These car stereo adverts from 1974 look great nearly 40 years on. Becker and Blaupunkt are both great brands and i think the products look appealing even now. Who would not want that Becker in their classic 911, Beetle or classic sports car.  Der klang und die technik....

Austin 'AllAgro' -

Yes i am poking a little fun at the Austin Allegro. And it's amazing what messages the advertisers were using to sell the old Austin. History tells us it was dreadful and verging on a national joke, but the original Harris Mann concept was actually a great and exciting concept back in 1969. It had so much potential and some innovation and i have a guilty soft spot! http://www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/2011/07/26/concepts-and-prototypes-austin-allegro/ - the execution and build much less so....

Classic Porsche advert

Great 80s Porsche TV ad...some great racing footage

Tim Layzell contemporary motorsport artist

Few motorists that produce automotive related art manage to produce such a perfect blend of contemporary looking pieces that convey speed, capture the actual vehicles and look amazing.  I believe Tim Layzell to be one of the few exceptions. His works look rich, colourful and equally at home in a London Penthouse as in a rural pad. Most of his motoring creations use older vehicles but never look twee or pastiche. I'll commission an original one day....http://www.timlayzell.com/motor_art_originals.htm

Vic Elford Targa Florio Poster 1968

What a fabulous example of a motor racing poster that focuses on the face of the driver and not the car - and what a characterful face, a proper bloke the like of which don't seem to race in F1 these days!
These new kids are fast but Vic Elford appears has steel and personality in spades.

US Speedways poster from early 20th century

speedwaypostersI particularly enjoy poster styles that are individual to an era, period or country. They have their own unique feel and style and bring to life a unique period of motorsport. 100 years ago and this US poster evokes speed and excitement!

1970s F1 logos - i love these retro styles

Don't you just love the primary colours and bold shapes. Not familiar with all these brands and i guess some don't survive but a interesting retro batch....see http://blog.iso50.com/25868/vintage-70s-racing-decals/
